British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
