Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
