The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being considered a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
